Friday Flash

October 2nd, 2015

news-clipartParents, please be aware that when your child’s teacher is out and he/she has a substitute dismissing the class, the substitute will be asking to see identification if he/she does not know you or the person you have authorized to pick up your child.  This requires a little extra time, but your child’s safety is of the utmost importance to us. Thank you for your patience.

Teacher & Staff Appreciation Days – For the 2015 – 16 school year, our plans for Teacher & Staff Appreciation have changed.  In lieu of a whole week of Teacher & Staff Appreciation in the Spring, we will be trying something new and having three individual Appreciation Days throughout the year.   It is our hope that spreading out such Appreciation will be fun for the teachers and staff, as well as a bit easier on all of the SMS families!   Teacher & Staff Appreciation Days are currently scheduled for:

  • Wed, October 14, 2015
  • Wed, February 17, 2016
  • Thurs, April 21, 2016

For October 14th’s Day of Appreciation, we are asking that each child send in a note or card for his/her Homeroom Teacher and Assistant, if there is one.   Room parents will help coordinate the cards for the Specials Teachers and Staff that each grade level is appreciating.  In addition, there will be a few items for the teachers and staff that will be raffled off during the day.  If you have an item or gift card that you would like to donate for this raffle, please contact Jennifer Biggs at jennbiggs1031@gmail.com by Friday, October 9th.

Thank you to our Auction & Gala Photo Booth Sponsors, Dillon Law Group & Alex Fernandez – EZ-Vest Realty! Both the Dillons and the Fernandez families have children here at SMS.

Please see the attached Auction & Gala Newsletter for up-to-date information!

October 8th is “Bring Your Bible to School Day” – On this day, we will celebrate our freedom to worship and practice our faith.   Students are invited to bring their Bibles to school.

Eagle Open – Our golf tournament might have been a little wet, but it was still a “hole” lot of fun!  Thank you to everyone who came out to golf, all of our fabulous volunteers and, of course, to all of our sponsors! We had 32 hole sponsors from alumni signs, graduation, in memory of family members, businesses and congratulations messages. A big thank you to our “Eagle Sponsor” M5 Consulting, who provided us with Eagle Open visors.  Robert Yeh – a long-time supporter of our Eagle Open, sponsored a sack lunch provided by Traditions Catering.  Our golf carts were sponsored by Homewood Suites & Hilton Garden Inn in Greenbrier and SOF Spoken.  Our beverage carts were sponsored by Christian Psychotherapy Services and by our School Advisory Board.  We had enough golfers to host two flights and here are the results:

2nd Place second flight was a team from South Norfolk Golf Association – Mr. Coke, Mr. Moser, Mr. Phillips and Mr. Underwood

1st Place second flight was our very own Mrs. Price (teacher 5B), Mr. Price, Mr. Alberto (Mrs. Alberto’s husband) and Mr. Almazon

2nd place first flight was Mr. Keith Tuttle, Riley T. (student 8B), Chris Tuttle and Ms. Hannah Amburn

1st Place first flight was Fred Myers (afternoon crossing guard), Mr. Anderson, Mrs. Anderson and J. Clymer

*Riley T. won longest drive

*Sughun Kim won closest to the pin (guest of Mike Smith)

Congratulations to all of our winners!

GOD’S HELPERS SAYS THANK YOU!!! A very big thank you to SMS for “Going Gold 4 Kids with Cancer”!!!  Thank you for all your prayers, love and support of Maddie’s Lemonade & Cupcakes-4-a-Cure! A very generous $365.00 was given from your hearts – those funds were donated to a 10 year old little girl named Maddie-Grace who lives in Maryland. She has been fighting leukemia since she was 3 years old and has relapsed 6 times! Right now, her own t-cells are being re-engineered through a trial study at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in the hopes of getting her into remission. Maddie’s mom, Robyn, sent me a personal thank you to share with the school!

Our next mission coming up is “Operation Christmas Child”!! We are so excited about kicking this program off this year! We will be sending out more information through the Friday Flash, but wanted to spread the word to start saving up those little items that could make a difference in a child’s life & fit into a shoebox that will travel around the world, helping to spread the Gospel message of God’s great love for us!  Our Shoebox Packing Party is scheduled for Tuesday, November 17th, after school – hope to see you there!

Parents – The before and after school statements were emailed today.  Please contact the office if you did not receive yours.
